Privacy
What Gygès Online keeps about you, and why. There is not much of it.
What you give us
- Your username, which everyone sees: on your games, the leaderboard and in chat.
- Your email address, which nobody else sees. It is how you sign in, how a forgotten password is reset, and where your game emails go if you leave them on (you can turn them off in Settings).
- Your password, which is never stored as you typed it, only as a scrypt hash that cannot be turned back into it.
- If you choose to add them: a country, a line about yourself and a photo, all shown on your profile. The photo is cropped and shrunk in your browser before it is sent, so the original, and anything it says about where it was taken, never leaves your device.
What playing creates
- Your games, every move of them. Games are public: anyone can watch one or look back through it, and your rating is worked out from them.
- What you write. The lobby and Chat topics are public. A game's chat is seen by its two players. Private messages are between you and the friend you sent them to.
- Your friends list, and your notifications, which are kept for ninety days.
- When you were last active, shown on your profile so opponents know whether you are around.
Cookies, and what your browser keeps
One cookie, gyges_session, which keeps you signed in for up to thirty days. Your browser also remembers a couple of settings on your own device, such as whether move paths are drawn. There are no analytics, no advertising and no trackers, and the fonts are served by this site, not fetched from anyone else.
Who else sees any of it
Emails are sent through Resend, which handles your address and the email itself to deliver it. The site runs on a server rented from Amazon. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with anyone else.
Keeping accounts safe
Failed sign-ins are counted, by account and by network address, so that a password cannot be guessed at speed. The count is kept for fifteen minutes and then forgotten. The server keeps no log of the pages you visit.
Leaving
You can close your account yourself, at the bottom of your Settings (in the menu under your name, once signed in). That deletes your email, password, photo, country and bio, your friends list and your private messages, and signs you out everywhere. Your finished games, and what you wrote in public chat, stay under your name so your opponents' records stay whole, and the name is not given to anyone else. Backup copies of the database made before you left can still hold your details until they are replaced.
Questions
Ask in Chat, where the person who runs the site reads every topic.
